Word Mark or Logo — What Should You Register?

The choice affects the scope of protection. Picking the wrong one can create problems down the line

KOKOIP

Word Mark

protects your brand name in any font, color, or design. Your protection stays intact even if your logo evolves over time

KOKOIP logo markKOKOIP

Design Mark

protects your specific logo. Narrower coverage, but valuable once your visual identity is finalized

Our Recommendation
Start with a word mark — it gives you the broadest protection. Add a logo mark once your visual identity is locked in. Both can be filed together for full coverage.

For Amazon Sellers, Trademarks play a vital role

a trademark isn't just about stopping copycats. It's the key that unlocks Amazon Brand Registry — and Brand Registry is what separates a basic seller account from a fully-powered brand presence on the platform.

Once enrolled, here's what you actually get access to:

  • A+ Content — go beyond the standard listing with richer visuals and layouts that convert better
  • Brand Storefront — your own dedicated space on Amazon, no ads required to drive traffic there
  • Sponsored Brands & Video Ads — high-visibility ad placements your competitors without trademarks simply can't access
  • Brand Analytics — real data on what customers search for, and what they compare you against before buying
  • Vine & Transparency — fast-track your first reviews and stop counterfeits before they reach customers
Good news

You don't need to wait for the final registration in every situation. A pending application number can often support Brand Registry review — and you can have that within days of filing.

FAQ

Yes, but usually for a different reason than a U.S., EU, UK, Japan, or Australia trademark. A China trademark is especially useful if your products are manufactured in China, sourced from Chinese factories, or exposed to copycat sellers and trademark squatters in the Chinese market. For Amazon Brand Registry, sellers normally focus on the trademark office that Amazon accepts for the marketplace they want to protect. A China trademark may not be the fastest Brand Registry route for Amazon.com or Amazon Europe, but it can be very valuable for factory control, marketplace enforcement in China, and stopping others from registering your brand locally.
For most cross-border sellers, the English word mark should come first because it is the brand customers see on Amazon, packaging, and product pages. If you also use a Chinese brand name with suppliers, distributors, social media, or local e-commerce channels, the Chinese name should be considered separately. A logo can help, but it is not a replacement for the brand name. In China, a word mark gives cleaner protection over the name itself, while a logo protects a specific visual design. If budget allows, many sellers protect the English name first, then add the Chinese name and logo as the business grows.
China is a first-to-file market in practice. If another party files your brand first in the right product class, they may create problems with suppliers, customs, Chinese platforms, or future expansion into China. Even if you created the brand overseas, it can still be painful to recover it later. This is why China trademark filing is often treated as a defensive move. It is not just about selling in China today; it is about preventing someone else from taking a brand that appears on your packaging, invoices, product photos, and factory files.
Choose classes based on the actual products you sell and the way those products are described under the Chinese trademark classification system. China also uses subclasses, which can be very important. Two products in the same Nice class may still be treated differently if they fall into different subclasses. For example, an Amazon seller with kitchen products, pet products, and electronic accessories may need different classes and different subclass coverage. Simply copying an Amazon category is not enough. The filing should be mapped to the actual goods and likely enforcement targets.
Yes. You do not need to prove use before filing a regular China trademark application. That makes China suitable for early brand protection, especially before product launch or before giving the brand name to suppliers. That said, a China registration can become vulnerable to non-use cancellation after three consecutive years of non-use. Sellers should keep records such as product packaging, sales pages, invoices, purchase orders, shipping records, and advertising materials showing real use of the mark.
Keep clear evidence showing the brand used on the actual goods, packaging, labels, product manuals, invoices, shipping documents, online listings, and advertising. For cross-border sellers, factory purchase orders and export documents can also be useful. Do not rely only on design mockups or a logo file. If you ever need to oppose a squatter, respond to a non-use cancellation, or prove ownership to a platform or supplier, real commercial evidence is much stronger than internal design materials.
A smooth China trademark application can move relatively quickly compared with some countries, but timing depends on examination, publication, possible refusals, and opposition. If the mark is distinctive and the goods are properly selected, the process is usually more predictable. The bigger issue is not only timing, but clearance. If a similar earlier mark exists in the same or similar subclass, the application may be refused or blocked. A search before filing is important because China has a very large trademark database and crowded product classes.
No. A China trademark protects you in Mainland China only. It does not automatically protect your Amazon listings in the United States, Europe, the UK, Japan, or other marketplaces. For Amazon sellers, China protection is usually part of a wider filing plan: one trademark for the manufacturing or sourcing side, and separate trademarks for the major sales markets where Brand Registry and customer-facing enforcement matter most.
Yes. If your brand is registered in China, you are in a stronger position when dealing with factories, packaging vendors, and local partners. It helps show that the brand belongs to you and reduces the risk that a supplier registers the brand or uses it for other customers. For private label sellers, this is especially important before sharing final packaging artwork or launching a high-volume product. The earlier the brand is protected, the easier it is to control manufacturing-side risk.
Yes. A China trademark is generally protected for 10 years and can be renewed for further 10-year periods. There is no U.S.-style regular statement of use filing, but the mark should still be used and evidence should be preserved. If the mark is not used for three consecutive years, another party may try to cancel it for non-use. For sellers, the practical rule is simple: renew on time, keep using the brand, and save real-world evidence every year.
